Environmental Education PacksFunds needed: R100000
WEI started running environmental education workshops in schools in and around the iSimangaliso World Heritage Site in 2013. We're now trying to expand this work into a greater number of communities. We need to buy equipment, fund a local Zulu-speaking staff member, and provide snacks and prizes for each of the programmes.
Every donor to this project, no matter how small the donation, will be given regular updates from our Education Coordinator and will receive a photo of the students hard at work during their first training session.
Kruger Predator MonitoringFunds needed: R40000
We're starting to get a good understanding of predator movements through our study area in Kruger, but now need funding for 10 camera traps so we can add to our individual ID databases and get a better understanding of nocturnal movements. This allows us to map territories and home ranges to identify key protection areas for threatened species.
Elephant Stress ProgrammeFunds needed: R30000
WEI have recently linked up with the University of Guelph in Canada to study the impact of contraceptive darting and aerial censuses on elephant populations in Welgevonden Game Reserve. These techniques are used a lot in South Africa but the impact on animal welfare is still poorly understood. We are looking for funding to cover our weekly field costs, which will include tracking the herds with radio telemetry as well as the collection, storage and transportation of faecal samples to the lab in Canada.
